Universal Health – The Need For Inclusive Patient Care

In line with Universal Healthcare Day, taking place on 12 December 2018, the Presidential Health Summit Patient Advocacy Group, met to discuss the need for inclusive health- and patient-care in South Africa.

The patient advocacy groups, in conjunction with human rights activists, collectively called for the addition of its Mission Statement in the Presidential Health Summit 2018 final report, which states the following:

We, the Presidential Health Summit Advocacy Group, commit to the transformation of health in South Africa, through engagement with all stakeholders of the Presidential Health Summit 2018. We do this in order to establish universal access to affordable, quality, timeous and appropriate health care, for all South Africans. We further commit to ongoing relationships with the Department of Health, the Ministry of Health, the office of The Presidency, other organs of state, and the private health sector and business in order to protect the rights of patients in this country while strengthening the South African health system towards an integrated and unified health system.

We shall continue to educate and engage with all South Africans to promote understanding of the complexities of future health systems, as well as their rights, responsibilities and privileges therein. As the united custodians of patient advocacy, we place the patient at the center of this.

We intend to be the voice of all patients in South Africa and nothing will be decided about patients without their contribution.
