COVID-19: Absa partners with PinkDrive to increase protective gear, testing and humanitarian assistance

Absa has donated R1.5 million through their COVID-19 Social Relief Response to PinkDrive’s COVID-19 programme.  PinkDrive, a significant player in the gender related cancer sector, has joined forces with the National Department of Health (NDoH) to bring COVID-19 testing and screening to targeted hot spots in Gauteng, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.

“In a country of more than 58.5 million people, with high poverty and inequality rates, the need far surpasses the availability of resources, and requires a collective response. We mobilised all our resources and appealed to Corporates, Foreign Embassies and Philanthropic Organisations to partner us by funding the initiative to support the NDoH at this critical time,” says Noelene Kotschan, CEO and Founder of PinkDrive.

As concerns grow over locally transmitted cases of COVID-19, PinkDrive has been providing their mobile screening vehicles and medical staff to assist with the call for the roll out of mass testing. The ongoing public health response to COVID-19, in line with Absa’s global best practice approach, is focused on education, awareness, prevention and treatment. In addition, further community-based tracing personnel will be trained and deployed to provide added capacity.

“A key concern is the ability of our public health system to effectively manage a rise in infections while maintaining primary care services. It is therefore imperative to support and augment the Health Department’s capacity around testing, screening and tracing to help curb the spread of the virus,” says Kotschan.

PinkDrive has taken a principle-based approach in formulating the COVID-19 Social Relief response, guided by two core imperatives, namely protecting lives, and protecting livelihoods. The approach has three core focus areas, which will be implemented over a six-month period.

These focus areas include:

  1. The expansion of tracing, screening and testing to enable effective management of the spread and suppression of the virus;
  2. The provision of medical equipment such as personal protective equipment (PPE) to frontline healthcare workers and supporting triage tents/field hospitals to enable an adequate public health response;
  3. Supporting the vulnerable through the provision of basic humanitarian assistance in the form of food, hygiene, and sanitation.
